The President<\/span>\u00a0of Botswana, His Excellency Advocate Duma Gideon Boko on Tuesday, 9th August 2025 announced the creation of a new<\/span>\u00a0Botswana Sovereign Wealth Fund Limited\u00a0<\/span>with a Nigerian,\u00a0<\/span>Mr. Farouk Gumel<\/span>\u00a0as inaugural\u00a0Chairman\u00a0of its Board of Directors.\u00a0Mr\u00a0Gumel is currently the\u00a0<\/span>Vice\u00a0Chairman\u00a0of Tropical General Investments (TGI) Group and immed<\/span>iate past\u00a0Chairman\u00a0of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA)<\/span>. The announcement<\/span>\u00a0was made at the\u00a0<\/span>official launch of the new multi-billion-dollar Sovereign Wealth Fun<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>t the President\u2019s office in\u00a0Gabarone,\u00a0<\/span>Botswana.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

President Boko<\/span>\u00a0underscored the significance of this step, placing it at the heart of his government\u2019s vision for economic diversification and long-term resilience:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe launch of the Botswana Sovereign Wealth Fund represents an investment in the future of our country. It is about creating jobs, driving growth, and ensuring that our nation\u2019s wealth works for all Batswana. This is a foundation upon which we will diversify our economy, open new frontiers of opportunity, and build lasting prosperity for future generations. We are sending a message to the world that Botswana is ready to compete, invest, and lead.\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The BSWF is designed to reduce the nation\u2019s historical reliance on diamond mining by channeling resource revenues into strategic investments across diverse sectors such as infrastructure, technology, healthcare, and renewable energy. It is\u00a0belie<\/span>ved\u00a0the fund will be amongst the largest in Africa.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Farouk Gumel will chair a deeply experienced and diverse board selected to provide comprehensive and strategic oversight. The board\u2019s composition reflects a powerful blend of local\u00a0expertise\u00a0and global vision, uniting key national and international figures.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vice Chairperson of the Board is Ms. Emmah\u00a0Peloetletse\u00a0who is currently the Head of Service to the Government of Botswana as well as Secretary to the President and Cabinet of Botswana. Ms.\u00a0Peloetletse\u00a0is also the Chairperson of Debswana, the world\u2019s largest diamond mining company.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other members of the board include Ms.\u00a0Malebogo\u00a0Mpugwa, Chief People Officer at De Beers Group, the\u00a0worlds\u00a0leading diamond company; Mr. Anil Dua, Co-founder of Gateway Partners and Non-Executive Director of\u00a0Afreximbank; Mr.\u00a0Boingotlo\u00a0Toteng, Senior Managing Partner of\u00a0Toteng\u00a0& Company and Legal Advisor on Presidential Affairs; Mr. Sunil Sabharwal, former U.S. Executive Director to the IMF; Mr.\u00a0Lesego\u00a0Caster Moseki, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Botswana; and Mr. Rizwan Desai, Managing Partner of Desai Law\u00a0Group and former Chairman of the Botswana Stock Exchange.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Together, this board\u00a0represents\u00a0a powerful blend of national leadership, international investment\u00a0expertise, and corporate governance experience, ensuring the fund is equipped with both global insight and local depth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In his role as\u00a0Chairman, Mr. Gumel will lead the board in setting the fund\u2019s investment strategy, governance framework, and risk management policies.
